Did you know that oil has been used for thousands of years? Oil has been pumped, drilled and used for all kinds of things, and it has definitely become a part of human history. How Do We Get Oil?

Oil is drilled from the ground, where underground reservoirs lie. Nearly 2,500 years ago, some of the first oil wells were found in China, where they used bamboo to dig and find the oil. Now, most countries use oil drills to extract oil.

What Is Oil?

The oil found in these reserves is sometimes called crude oil. Crude oil is unrefined and contains hydrocarbon deposits and other types of organic material, as it is formed from dead organisms. This type of oil is measured in barrels, which is about 42 US gallons. 

Crude oil is used for all kinds of things, namely gasoline, plastics and synthetic fabrics. Unfortunately, there have been several oil spills that have harmed ecosystems. They waterproof the feathers of birds and cause internal organ damage to creatures that digest the oil.  Many of these oil spills have been accidentally caused, and account for 12% of oil in oceans. 

Because crude oil has been used for so many things and has been used for years, there is a lot to learn about it. As new technology begins to be created, it will only add to the history of oil and what its future will look like.
