On average, we need to consume around 20 to 50 liters of clean water a day for these things but its importance is still being taken for granted. However, why should we care? Unclean water can be deadly. Many people suffer from “diarrheal diseases” such as hepatitis, typhoid, and cholera because of it. Though some of these water-related ailments are preventable, many suffer more than they should result in death.

The use of unclean water in food production and in sanitation can still bring water-related ailments. Some bacterias in contaminated water cannot be killed even if you boil it. Therefore, it is necessary to have a good water source.

Importance of clean water

After we know how polluted water affects humans, we are back to the importance of clean water. As unclean water can be deadly, the main importance of clean water is for health and sanitation. Sixty percent of the human body is water. This is the reason why a human can live for two weeks without food but not without water. It also fights Toxins, which gives our body the ability to function properly and contains oxygen that transports in all cells of the body. Moreover, it helps the blood flow freely across our organs.

The use of unclean water for sanitation is also quite risky. The living organism may get into your body as you use contaminated water in washing dishes, laundry and washing your hand or taking a bath. This is also crucial to food production as there might be some organisms that cannot be killed through boiling. These organisms may result in skin irritation to more severe problems.

Whether you follow the 6-10 glasses of water a day and taking a bath daily, settling to any available water can still harm you. Our body is capable of killing certain bacteria but polluted water contains substances and particles that should be eliminated, as it cannot naturally die even in boiled ones.

Purification for Clean Water

Traditional practice such as boiling water into its point (around 100 °C or 212 F) is most effective but there are other chemicals that cannot be dissolved using such a method. Because of heavy water contamination, there are industries doing water purification. It is a process of removing bad chemicals present in contaminated water. Most purification is being done for human consumption such as drinking, food production or cooking but can also be specific for industrial, medical and pharmacological.

Aside from water purification, there are other treatments available. Some of those are water distillation, Portable water purification, and water filtration. Methods used in the purification may vary depending on where the water will be used.

How to avoid Unclean Water

Nowadays, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises that even water taken from springs needs to be tested for purification. This is because of the change in the environment and the effect of global warming. Around the year 2007, other dangerous particles are sometimes seen in spring water.

In most cases, mineral water, bottled water and purified drinking water available in the market are safe for drinking. It is advised however that it should be consumed for a specific period before it expires, as one of the causes of contamination is improper storage.

A water fountain is also one of the water sources we should care about. Some water fountains, especially in the rural areas, are poorly maintained. This is due to the lack of budget for the purification system despite the order of the United Nations.

Water is one of the most basic needs of humans. Its contribution mainly focuses on our health. Consuming polluted water harms our health as it causes serious ailments. Some of these are curable but many can be fatal.

The danger of unclean water can be acquired by direct consumption such as drinking but also through indirect consumption such as washing and cooking. The cleaned water can still be contaminated and the common cause of that is improper storage. Mineral water, purified or bottled water found in the market is generally enough for drinking purposes.
