All about humidity in the winter

The joys of winter are great. Snow, hot cocoa mornings, thick socks, cute winter hats, gloves, boots, and coats, and of course everyone’s favorite holidays to end the year. The last thing you’re probably thinking about while dabbling in winter festivities is the humidity in your home. Though, you should.

Humidity in the home

Humidity can be a huge problem in your home. If you have too much of it, it can cause issues to your foundation and windows.

If you don’t have enough of it, you can wake up with health scares like bloody noses and dry skin. So how do you balance the humidity so you can enjoy winter without much worry?

If you’re already aware of how much drier your air is inside your home, it’s best to invest in a home humidifier for each of your rooms (or transport it throughout the house wherever you’re located to save money).

In the winter, your home is drier because of the heat. When you turn on your wood fireplace or your heater, the water vapor in your air automatically decreases as it turns warm and vanishes. That’s why having a portable humidifier throughout your home is important not only for your dry skin but for the overall well-being of your home and body.

How much humidity is ‘correct’?

As mentioned briefly, too much humidity can cause foundation issues for your home and windows. That’s why it’s important to have a balancing act in your home of 30-40% humidity.

If you notice condensation appearing on your windows, you may need to adjust this number. Condensation on your windows happens when there’s more moisture outside than there is inside the home. This condensation can cause your windows to mold, rot, and need to be replaced much sooner than anticipated. None of which are healthy on your budget or mental well-being.

Furnace not working

If you notice it is getting chilly outside and as you turn on your heater, your home is not warming, contact your local HVAC company to send a technician to your home. You may have some heater issues and need a new heater installation complete. Hopefully not, but in the event that you do, it’s better to find out about this investment before the weather drops even more and you’re left freezing.
